What's Your Specialty?
To specialize means: "to concentrate one's efforts in a special activity, field, or practice" (according to Webster's).
A cardiologist "specializes" in the heart. He studies the heart. He takes care of the heart. He does surgery on the heart. His focus is the heart.
But it's not the heart that's having problems right now. It's the brain. And it's an emergency. The neurosurgeon is not available. There's no time. What should we do? We need to move immediately.
I know. Let's call the cardiologist.
It's a stroke (pun intended) of luck that he just happens to be here. And he's used to working on complex organs after all. He should be able to handle the brain. Why not?
Of course, I'm being facetious. And for a reason. Some of us are cardiologists doing brain surgery? (And we wonder why we're frustrated.)
It's so easy to get off the beaten track and into areas that are not necessarily our expertise ~ fill in the blank with whatever career field you want. (And there are people who are very helpful to send us in that wayward direction. Know any?)
When you understand your specialty and "specialize" (stick to it) it takes the pressure off. Not that you can't do any of the other things, too, but you stay focused on what you do best. Everybody's the better for it (especially the patient who needs his brain worked on).
