Ten Commandments of Blogging

On the mountain long ago Moses received God's law. I haven't been up to a mountain or anything, but I thought I'd use this pattern to make some points about blogging (and micro-blogging, too, if you're in to social media like Twitter).

So here you go with the Ten Commandments of blogging...

1. Thou shalt offer fresh and personal content and perspective with thy blog that you and only you can produce.

2. Thou shalt carve with lexis that common folk can twig (translation: You will write using words that real people can understand).

3. Thou shalt not tear someone else down with thy blog. If you have an issue with that person, go to them to work it out.

4. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor with thy blog.

5. Thou shalt not pluck quotes from thy neighbor's blog without giving him credit.

6. Thou shalt not steal content from thy neighbor's blog and portray it as thine own.

7. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's blog, but will be happy with thine own.

8. Thou shalt not spend more time blogging, reading blogs and/or commenting on blogs (let alone with any other type of social media) than with thy wife, kids and pet.

9. Thou shalt take time for rest and relaxation from blogging at consistent intervals. Go outside and smell the roses.

10. Thou shalt not make an idol out of blogging. Thy life consists of much more than that.

  12. I agree with Ann Cummings that there are some truly gifted bloggers that have the gift of gab.

Not everyone has that gift. Doesn't mean you can't have a good solid blog, but there are gem posts out there.

  48. Very cute. The biggest "sin" I see are bloggers copying and pasting whole articles off sites like CNN and then putting the whole thing into their blog, adding the byline (and convincing themselves that if they "attribute" it's ok). That's not ok! It's a copyright violation if you take more than a couple of lines!!

The other big "sin" is doing the same thing with photos. SFGate's blog, On The Block, does this - and they're mainstream! They take photos from other websites without permission but "source credit" it and think it's ok. It's not ok - it is also a copyright violation.

    Keep at it, Crusader!

Now I have a question.....is there any place on the internet that offers "free" pictures we can use on our blogs that will not violate any rules. Also...how do you leave a tag back to the person who has given you permission to use a photo. Don't know how to do that either. I appreciate the help as I am new at blogging.

  162. To my knowledge, I don't believe I've broken any of these rules. I have complained about a company on my blog, but I've TRIED MANY times over to resolve that issue with that company to no avail. So the blog post about them was my last straw, and if I could avoid having anything to do with them period I would!!

  178. This is great! I find myself guilty of being covetous of others' blogs at times, but only because they do things so well. The key is to learn from them, not let the jealousy consume you! Excellent stuff with a touch of humor, thanks for sharing!

Good job, very informative. Thank goodness, the baby blogger, twitterer that I am, no commandment broken. I tweet just once a day and that's enough for me. My point has been made. I just read other tweets, enjoy and learn fom those I can and those that hold nothing for me, I forget. Simples!
