6 Things to Keep in Mind When You've Lost Something

My wife was out on a walk with my 4-year old son (he's 18 now). One minute she was talking with a neighbor. The next minute he was gone. (Can you just imagine?)

They would look high and low. The neighbor got in her car and drove around. Finally, they discovered him up on a balcony. My wife said, "Don't move." Mom and son were reunited.

There are a lot of things we can lose (beyond a child). We can lose our wedding ring. (I've done that.) We can lose our job. (Many are these days.) We can lose our business. (That's happening, too.) Some even lose their soul.

The bottom line is there are ways of dealing with lost things and there are ways of NOT dealing with lost things. To avoid the latter, prepare yourself ahead of time for potential losses. Start with the following list...

1. Don't panic.
2. There are others who have been where you're at (you're not alone).
3. Seek out somebody else's help (recovery comes faster with support).
4. Sometimes the search can take a while (be in it for the long haul).
5. It is always possible to rebound from a loss.
6. Some losses turn out to be not such a bad thing after all.

  1. Losing your child is so scary and your wife must been worried! The same thing happened to me when I lost my 3 year old in a store. Turn your head for a second and it is funny how toddlers can just disappear! Good advice! I talk about other things toddlers are good at here: www.ChatterTOT.com
