Ten Commandments of Blogging
Tweet |
On the mountain long ago Moses received God's law. I haven't been up to a mountain or anything, but I thought I'd use this pattern to make some points about blogging (and micro-blogging, too, if you're in to social media like Twitter).
So here you go with the Ten Commandments of blogging...
1. Thou shalt offer fresh and personal content and perspective with thy blog that you and only you can produce.
2. Thou shalt carve with lexis that common folk can twig (translation: You will write using words that real people can understand).
3. Thou shalt not tear someone else down with thy blog. If you have an issue with that person, go to them to work it out.
4. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor with thy blog.
5. Thou shalt not pluck quotes from thy neighbor's blog without giving him credit.
6. Thou shalt not steal content from thy neighbor's blog and portray it as thine own.
7. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's blog, but will be happy with thine own.
8. Thou shalt not spend more time blogging, reading blogs and/or commenting on blogs (let alone with any other type of social media) than with thy wife, kids and pet.
9. Thou shalt take time for rest and relaxation from blogging at consistent intervals. Go outside and smell the roses.
10. Thou shalt not make an idol out of blogging. Thy life consists of much more than that.

Thank you! I especially need to pay attention to #8!
Thanks, Moses, for putting the list in an easily recognizable format. I promise to try to follow them. Good job.
I will follow your lead....

Forgive me Father, for I have sinned...I violate #7 on a daily basis. Can't help it...if you saw them, you'd want them, too! Do I have to do penance now?
I love this. What a great post. I am soooo linking back to it. ;-)
I LOVE these, and sometimes it's hard to not be guilty of #7....some really awesome ones out there that one can't help but drool over at times.
That was great and violated several already today!
Rut roh I am in trouble huh? I have over 15 blogs.. but wait I do it for a living ;) thanks Moses very cool list
I agree with Ann Cummings that there are some truly gifted bloggers that have the gift of gab.
Not everyone has that gift. Doesn't mean you can't have a good solid blog, but there are gem posts out there.
*ahem*
5. Thou shalt not pluck quotes from thy neighbor's blog without giving him credit

Great tips...Thanks for the post to my twitter :)
Excellent!!! I really enjoyed the truth within the "Commandments" - we should all adopt them!
Yep, #8 hit pretty close to home for me too.
Number 8 is my downfall and maybe #9 and #7. Oh heck anything that relates to my living on this durn computer. There is just so much to learn.
Hear, hear. This is an awesome list. Thank God I followed you on Twitter..hehe..
Wondering if PerezHilton has read this and "Thou shall not bring someone down"..LOL.
Thanks for the list, this is awesome!

does that mean I will not get into blogger heaven?
Gosh thanks father because so far i have not sinned...but i know that in future i will need to be very careful not to break the rules:)
Lisa
Wow, thats scary.. I am nowhere near sinning yet.. but can see how it could happen!
Thanks that was very original and exceptional. I appreciate the last few commandments sometimes those things can be forgotten. :)
Thanks! A great way of looking at things and also putting a good perspective on it! Although... You are kinda taking the 10 commandments in vain a little and making a bit of a mockery of God....
I was practicing #9 but then my allergies came on real strong.
Great list.
Great blog, and I'm way to guilty of way to many of them. I had better straighten up. lol
#8,9 & 10 are surely sending me to blog hell
Interest Blog of commandments?
All of this makes absolute sense and I would ensure to keep atleast 3-4 of themand practice them relisgiously!!!! Thanks a bunch for the insight :)
Amazing, hahahah pretty funny, and I have to start working on those... I'm going to follow them :D.
excellent! if only all twitterers could read this...
I was doing ok until 8,9 and 10. Oops! Great article, liked it a lot.
Oh Lord let me repent for breaking commandments 7 -10 lol. Nice blog.
ha-ha...love #8. I need to remember that one. Thanks for sharing such a great content and thank your for your leadership.
Finally! Blogging Commandments that make sense! EXCELLENT!
Amen to that, as I go home now to pet my wife, and kiss my dog-no wait-reverse that...
Absolutely, positively will be referring back here. Great list all in one place. Thank you.
Real estate and blogging. Interesting. Will check more postings here.
Great list! Thank you for sharing this tips.. Blogging is not a easy job, it needs consistency, really need it!
Just burn our souls in effigy!
Hi,
Thanks to Twitter for allowing us to meet thinkers like you.
I have sinneth. I have bloggeth until the muscles behind my neck hurteth.
Thanks for the important reminders.
Oh, #9 doesn't happen often enough. I very often blog late at night, sometimes till 3 in the morning :) But that's because I love what I do, connecting with and being a resource for other green, frugal, breastfeeding moms.

Great post. I really love #8!
Nice post. Try to understand more and follow them. Thank you.
Thank you. Just starting blogging and will pay attention to the laws :o) Take care. Gry
Very cute. The biggest "sin" I see are bloggers copying and pasting whole articles off sites like CNN and then putting the whole thing into their blog, adding the byline (and convincing themselves that if they "attribute" it's ok). That's not ok! It's a copyright violation if you take more than a couple of lines!!
The other big "sin" is doing the same thing with photos. SFGate's blog, On The Block, does this - and they're mainstream! They take photos from other websites without permission but "source credit" it and think it's ok. It's not ok - it is also a copyright violation.
Keep at it, Crusader!
love the ten commandments. As for language, I now can enjoy other language blogs, thanks to google translate, though the language structure mqay be funny at times due to translation. Good moraloblog post!
Great blog! Thanks for the topics, this is awesome and real! Congratulations.
cute!
Thanks for using lexis that common folk can twig ;) … Nos 8 & 10 are definitely my favourite!
Thanks for sharing. Enjoyed it. Perhaps a #11, I learned this one the hard way: "Remember thy mother, for she may readeth thy blog."
Very good advice, in all 10 points. I'm sure Moses would approve. Good fun! Thank you.
Excellent. I might feel like translating into French someday
I think my husband wrote number 8.
Great list of commandments,
I think Moses needs to make several more lists. Face Book commandments, Twitter commandments, we don't need my space commandments, those people are already living in hell they just don't know it.
Thanks, Moze, but how'dja get alla this stuff carved in stone so quickly?
Yeah, I know "miracles". Completely ignoring the 24/7 IT Department! Typical front man, ignoring the back end.
LET MY PEOPLE CODE!!
I like your list, and I seem to be ok with 9 of them, but alas, I try to do #2. The problem is that I start out with plans to obey #2, but they aft gang agley. Do'h.
LoL. Love it sir. Great post!
Some good guidelines! I'm going to follow your lead and today I shall take time for rest and relaxation from blogging at consistent intervals. I will Go outside and smell the roses... that's If I find some...hmm maybe those roses will smell like beer in the pub.
I think I'm dangerously close to putting a little too much time into Financially Digital and not enough time "smelling thine roses". Great blogging commandments to keep in mind though so you don't end up being consumed by your project.
Awesome. I'll do my best not to break any but I am probably guilty of #7 now and again...
Especially like number one about fresh new perspective... fun blog you have here!
Forgive me Father for I have also sinned...What must I do for blogger atonement?
Great blog...
Lisa
Great Blog, rules to live by me thinks!
Words to live by. Many thanks for a great read!!
I am a mother so spending as much time with my daughter is quite possibly where I happen to get all of my insightfulness. :) My acre of lush garden takes up a large amount of my free time and nature is always reminding me of the blessings that I have surrounding me daily. God let's me blog to reach out to others of my wonderful journey. Wonderful post! ~Mary
Great article! Way to help everyone keep things in perspective.
Simplicity of your blog helps visitor in access it. And sure, great articles. And off course, great articles in it.
A + point for you.
Brilliant!
God bless you...
That was a great post and I laughed all the way through it. The biggest thing I pulled out of there was not coveting thine neighbors blogs. I tend to do that sometimes because I want to make as big a splash as them. It keeps the fire burning though as long as you don't covet in unhealthy doses right?!
Well said, thanks for the reminder.
Great post! Thanks for sharing it! I'm fairly new to blogging so it's a timely share by you as well.
Thanks!
Bill
Very very good post! Thank you for the reminders. I'm okay on all of them except 10. But this is new and exciting, like a little toy truck.
Thanks for that, number 8 is my downfall. This is just what I needed to remind myself there is another life I have to live.
Thanks Mike! It might look something like that, great job!
It is near the truth. I like and I was wondering if you
would accept that I translate it in french and publish it
on my blog (www.frederickroger.com)? With credits off course. Thank you Mike, it's great to have sent it to my Twitter!
Thanks for the early AM laugh!
Suggestion...
11. Thou shalt not retweet the same message 200 times a day!
Great job on these!
Great advice, I will take it to heart.
I heard there were 20 Commandments but that Moses lost the USB key and could only recall 10 of them.
Great list! Glad I could catch it before the new year so I can incorporate some into my mission statement for 2011!
Great post. Thanks for the wisdom. Think I am sinner and need to repent!
Great! I think that these rules are a must for blogger. What I like most is the eight commandment.
Love the commandments, if we break any of them, do we go to blog hell though? lol
When he parted the red sea, he would have seen the Fail Whale
Excellent, my friend! Excellent!
Love it! Thanks for sharing!
Excellant! Thanks for sharing the info!
Thank you for the great info!
Oh my gosh! this is so good, I love it! You made me laugh!
Buenos los mandamientos para mantener un blog! Hay muchas personas que plagian los comentarios de otros para su beneficio!Gracias por seguirme yo también lo sigo! Saludos desde esta patria soberana Venezuela!
I find it imposing yet introspecting...I may have breached some of your commandments of blogging but oh well,I'm doing it in the spirit of gladness and self expression. However, I'll be more mindful!!!Next time.
I've been a chronic 6 breaker. Not intentionally though. I'm doing a blog series about a book, and I mentioned the book and author on the FIRST post, and have forgotten on the remaining posts. I have to go and edit some 18 posts now....
I loved it! Thank you so much for writing these clever reminders of how we are to successfully blog. We need that. We don't need to live on our computers 24-7. Now I have a question.....is there any place on the internet that offers "free" pictures we can use on our blogs that will not violate any rules. Also...how do you leave a tag back to the person who has given you permission to use a photo. Don't know how to do that either. I appreciate the help as I am new at blogging.
Blessings on Easter!
I really loved this! Some great common sense advice written in a very familiar and understandable format (The Commandments). As they say...in humor there is truth and you have both here!
Now that you mention it, I think I need to work on #8. I'm all right with family time, but I definitely neglect my little pomeranian. :)
bless me father, 4 I have sinned...
"Thou shalt not tear someone else down with thy blog."
That's why we have MySpace. Until we grow up.
Awesome! Will be very helpful..thanks for the DM!

Good advice! And I take the real 10 commandments even more seriously!
Good advice. And I take the real 10 commandments even more seriously! Shalom!
A girl like me needs blog posts like these.
Your blog is quite fascinating. Where do you sell your books? I am now following you on Twitter; please follow me back and like me on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ghostwriterwriting and I will like you back if you send me your page URL there. Thanks, and Happy Holidays!!
Thank you for this. Although I do not blog, numbers 8, 9, & 10, can also serve as a reminder to us when to turn off twitter & get other things done. Blessings to you!
Now all we need is to get these commandments written in stone. I particularly appreciate 5 and 6. Am kind of wondering what it says about us that we need to say this stuff out loud. Seriously people...play nice. Lovely read.
Whew! Im in the clear! Thank goodness for that! Im not perfect but I did have to take a break for school and while I was in school I wished I was blogging. Now dont gt me wrong we can all fall under these at any time....Just rrynna follow the rules! :)
Great blog, at lest i knw that i will at least get to blogger heaven. I'm not guilty of any of those 10 commandments. I couldn't blog to save my life... How great is that?????
Great blog, at lest I know that I will go to blogger heaven,I can't blog to save my life.. How great is that?????
Thanks for sharing, this is terrific! I will keep it all in mind as we head into 2012.
Awesome! Great list
Brilliant post! I think sometimes #4's a tough one... For me at least.
Great list, and will do a lot of good if we follow them. God bless!
Cool post and great Ideal ...will try my best many thanks for sharing x x
Great blogpost. I shared it on Twitter.
Great post! Tweeted it out. So how do you get so many people to comment?? I struggle with that. I wish more people would leave something (nice) behind when they go. Love the Mosaic twist.
This is a great post! I sent it out via Twitter so others can see your helpful hints.
Woww cool, great advise
:) will do my best, thanks
That was just an awesome post. Two thumbs up and 5 stars in my book. http://financeyoga.com
ADORABLE! !!!
Hi! Just wanted to leave a comment letting you know I reblogged this hilarious post - I posted you're link giving you credit too, but I gave them the name the 10 Blogmandments as the title of my blog, and everytime I refer to them in my blog, ha sorry! I noticed a few of my twitter followers were posting about the Blogmandments so I thought I would let you know :]
http://aladiesperspective.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/10-blogmandments/ Is the link so you can check out my blog :] Have a great night!!

I especially loved #8,9 and 10 - I always feel TOO connected sometimes and even dream about Twitter when I have a fantastic family here that I need to really be enjoying. THanks for pointing out the IMPORTANT things. :)
How 'bout giving us the ten commandments of Twittering. #1: Thou shalt not spam your tweeps. I got a ton of tweets today from someone trying to sell me on a program to send my stats to the stratosphere. Made me want to pull my feathers out!
Great idea, wish that you could come up with some others for Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms.
Great stuff. Number One might apply to me.
Good job! excellent post!Thank you.
Great write up! I think #10 should be first and surely #5 and #6 are very key.
Great demonstration of how social media and bating works! Love it! Thanks for the list and for the lesson.
So does my hubby, lol.
So does my hubby, lol.
Good list, for newbie and experienced bloggers alike; also relates to a broader question of online ethics and behaviour.
Very creative Blog Commandements.I would revisit your site.donald
Very nice! I enjoyed it...
Loved it! After reading 8-10, I can get some sleep!
Great post. Yeah i struggle with number ten alot so i keep having digital fasts, but it is so awesome and refreshing to be away and each time i lose interest in the internet to focus on God. May others do the same. Now you should give us the Deuteronomy of the ten or perhaps the leviticus of them. The laws clearly defined
Ahhhh... #10. Difficult to accept. I love my blogs. ;)
Nicely done. Very valid "commandments" and posted with humor too. Love it.
Very well done. I got the link on Twitter. I'm so impressed with the number of comments you've got too. Maybe you should do a blog post on how to attract people to your blog and how to get them to comment! WELL DONE!
clever, Moses! i got the link via twitter, and it was awesome. Nice to be connected...
awesome, Moses! I got the link via twitter (clever!) and it's a great blog! nice to connect!
Thank you! Loved it!
Thank you! Loved it!
Interesting! but i have not committed anyone.
Interesting! but i have not committed anyone.
Very interesting, simple but precise. Although 8, 9 and 10 are pretty similar maybe you can sum them up in one commandment and you'll have room for two more. But still great, congratulations.

This is really neat. The commandment about giving others credit is key! I also enjoyed the simplicity of commandment #1 of focusing on fresh content. The challenge and exciting part for us all who blog. Thx for sharing!
@Mike, thank you, I can relate to #1 & #8 thank you, for sharing this post.
I'm happy to LIKE this -- but I'd prefer to see the name of the blog come up, not just info about your real estate company. People can see that when they go to your blog -- which they will be more inspired to do with a teaser headline. (Great blog, btw.)
Love this. Ty for the post.
Great post!
Great points! But, you left out one thing:
How shall one obey these impossible Commandments, being that all bloggers were born in blogging sin?
Pastor emeritus Nathan Bickel
www.thechristianmessage.org
www.moralmatters.org
I loved the thoughtfulness of your Blogging Commandments. I have no doubt that you're one of the top real estate agents in your state...very creative and pleasantly sophisticated. From twitter: new411cme
Let not your blog, or other blogs, become idols to you, indeed, but also, let not your blog remain idle as it pertains to the workings of the eternal, lest it lose its light and salt in a temporal world in need of both.
Even though the post is extremely funny, the message is also strong. That's an art ... and by the looks of the amounts of comments, definitely a conversation starter :) Thank you for your post.
BTW, thanks again for following us [@Pi_e_t) on Twitter. God bless ...
Creative and good advice. Ref #1, however, some quotes we can use reminders on such as the 10 Commandments and others from the Bible may best stand alone apart from our thoughts at times....
Thanks and good job,
Ben
Nice Sensable&Funny@t/same time!
Luv it!
I'm guessing this modern Moses would be getting his commandment on a tablet still - just this new one would be a bit less rocky.
Very good advice, especially for new bloggers. I think I need to work on #7 because it is hard not to compare blogs, even though I think it is better to stand out and be different. Thanks for the tips and I will be sure to apply them to my own blog at www.ChatterTOT.com =)
Oh my God!....found myself breaking almost all the commandments.I promise not to repeat the same.
Funny.Great job!
The 11th:
Thou shalt not envy thine neighbor's blogpost's comment count.Go count your own:)
This was great to read. Thanks for the lead on twitter. These are things to always keep in mind and practice. Keep up the great ideas!
I like #7. I have not been break to many of them. :)
To my knowledge, I don't believe I've broken any of these rules. I have complained about a company on my blog, but I've TRIED MANY times over to resolve that issue with that company to no avail. So the blog post about them was my last straw, and if I could avoid having anything to do with them period I would!!
:)
Well Said! Cheers!
fantastic, I will follow the Ten Commandments and love to follow your lead. My email is:
followmex10@gmail.com and website is:

Thanks
Great blogging tips. No cute comments again. Thanks.
:) love it!
It is so true! Blooging can consume your life. #8 I will pay extra attention to.
Great blog :)
Tons of fun. And great guidelines! :)
Sometimes, I'm guilty of #2. Horrors!
Funny ! And yes, 8 is a tough one.
Great post! You've got a new fan!
Well said! Amen! :) ;) #sk
Great post. I, too, need to follow #8 #9 and #10 - but I'm shamefully glad I'm not alone.
Thanks for the Commandments! Great to be authentic and provide fresh, personal content. We must provide value to each other with our own unique perspectives!
Well... The title caught my attention, first good sign, then the rest was pure poetry... Thanks for sharing a worthy and noble post... I'm sure it will be a timeless piece of work .
Namaste!

Muy buenno, che
Fantastic blog, thanks for sharing it
Thanks for this blog, I loved it.
Thanks for this. I will share it on twitter.
Heheheh, I don't have a wife, kids nor pets. Sorry, rule number 8! But-*checks number 9, looks outside* CURSES! I HAVE ROSES IN MY GARDEN!
Meinos Kaen
thanks for this
This is great! I find myself guilty of being covetous of others' blogs at times, but only because they do things so well. The key is to learn from them, not let the jealousy consume you! Excellent stuff with a touch of humor, thanks for sharing!
Wow these 10 commandments about blogging are the bomb!!!
Fun...and true! Keep it coming - we all need those reminders from time to time, especially about this being fun!
There is certainly a lot to find out about this issue. I like all of the points you have made.
I think you're ok :-) God loves us no matter what. Funny reply though.
I think I need to work on #8 a little. It's not the blogging it's every other Social Media Site. Amen to you, blog boy. Vknusta
Yes, Mosses - I will obey! Hilarious blog - a pleasure to read!
Brilliant! Gave me my laugh for the day and a good blog lesson.
Good job, very informative. Thank goodness, the baby blogger, twitterer that I am, no commandment broken. I tweet just once a day and that's enough for me. My point has been made. I just read other tweets, enjoy and learn fom those I can and those that hold nothing for me, I forget. Simples!
I need a priest to confess because I violate most of these commandments.
What should be the penalties? ; ) ...Great post!
Great post! Thank you! I know I'm guilty of #8,9 and 10.
Holy crap is the final commandment
"Thou shall gather thousands of comments?" Great job!
