How Are You With "New"?
I just celebrated my 11th anniversary working for Sugar Pine Realty. Some online folks mistakenly refer to me as a realtor®, but I am not. I am an IT guy (information technology) who oversees the website, blog, social media, etc., for our company. You can imagine all the changes that have taken place in real estate in a decade (especially those of you who have been in the business). We used to have a binder with our listings sitting on the up desk for agents to search during up calls. We used to have dial up internet connections where you could click on a link, go pour your coffee, stir in your cream and sugar, come back, sit down, and then maybe finally the page would be loaded. (And you're wanting to go back to the good ol' days?) Now we search homes and property online at high speeds, tweet and facebook all our followers and friends our latest listings and blog posts and personal tidbits of the day ~ and on and on. So what could be the next "new thing" awaiting us on the horizon? Not many people are good with "new". (I know it's not you.) It has to do with human nature. We get used to a way of doing things. We become competent at it ~ and comfortable. It works for us. It gets the job done. So why do we need to change? Why do we need something "new"? After all, wouldn't it have just been better if we stayed with up desk binders and dial up?

Would it have been better to stay with up desk binders and dial up? No. Would it have been easier? Yes. As you said, you become competent in where you are. Productivity stays at a high level when you are efficient in what you do. However, staying at the same level will cause your methods to become outdated as the years progress. As you remain where you are, your competitors are moving forward. Then you begin to lose customers because you cannot provide the speed, services, and level of competency as those who have been changing around you.
