One Strike and You're Out

And so what do you think about the Sonora/ Mother Lode area stores caught selling alcohol to minors in the latest sting? (Read the Union Democrat article HERE.) I guess the good news is it was only nine out of 35 stores tested that failed. (Kudos to the stores that passed.) The penalty for the violating stores depends on how many times they've been caught before. According to reports, three of the nine stores are repeat/second-time offenders. The other six are first-timers. And since there is a three strikes in three years approach when it comes to this type of offense, the fact is all nine violators are still being allowed to sell alcohol. You read it right. A state Alcohol Beverage Control unit spokesman on uniondemocrat.com is quoted as saying "he was unsure why there were more violations this time and called it 'discouraging.'" I think what's even more discouraging is that they're allowing the violating businesses to continue to operate. And in response to the question: Why were there more violations this time? It couldn't be that they weren't punished for their first violation, could it? What about a month off from selling period - close the store - at the first offense? Do we need to have an underager purchasing alcohol, getting sauced and then driving a car head-on killing a family before we get the message? One strike and you're out. It's as simple as that.
