9 Things You Should Know Before Moving to Sonora
Tweet |
I've been living in the Sierra foothill town of Sonora, California for more than a dozen years now. Just to show you how much my wife and I knew about the area prior to our arrival...
The greater Sonora area is known / referred to as the "Mother Lode" due to it's rich history and gold mining past. Thus, "Mother Lode" is used often whether it be included in a school's name, in a story in the local newspaper, etc. And so my wife really thought it was a woman / mom who owned the whole county named "Mother Lode." (Chuckle, chuckle.) This thinking was quickly corrected.
Since then we've come to learn a lot about the area of Sonora and the town itself. Some of it I share with you now in the following list:
9 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE MOVING TO SONORA...
SMALL TOWN FEEL
Population is approximately 9,000 (according to 2000 census).
GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE KIDS
Great place to live and raise kids. We came with a 2 and 5-year-old. They are 15 and 18 now (along with another 10-year old who was born here).
WELCOMING COMMUNITY
If you're from the valley of California or beyond, you'll be known as a flatlander, but you'll feel liked regardless.
ABOVE THE FOG, BELOW THE SNOW
Sonora proper is located at the 1,800 foot elevation (approximately). Valley fog and high Sierra snow stay out of the forecast most of the time.
ALL FOUR SEASONS
Winter, spring, summer and fall ~ the snow, heat, spring and fall colors, they're all here ~ right in your own backyard.
COLLEGE NEARBY
Kids graduating from high school don't need to leave the area immediately with Columbia College a short distance away.
NOTABLE PERSONS
Some famous people have been born in Sonora including attorney Melvin Belli and NFL quarterback Dan Pastorini
MOVIES
The list goes on of the films made in the Mother Lode including The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, Back to the Future III and Unforgiven. (Check out the entire list of films: HERE.)
CLOSE PROXIMITY TO RECREATIONAL HOT SPOTS
Lake Melones and Don Pedro, Dodge Ridge ski area, Yosemite National Park (on the list of the Top 100 famous wonders of the world) and so much more occupy the same county of Tuolumne.
