Real Estate Across The Generations
Tweet |
There's a lot of talk these days about "generations" and the importance of knowing how people "tick" depending on their birth date and generational frame reference.
The most accepted categories include: the Baby Boomers (born: 1946-1964), Generation X (born: 1964-1976), Generation Y / the Millennial or Internet Generation (born: 1976-2000) and then finally Generation Z / Post Millennials (born: 2001-present). (Dates are give or take.)
The thinking is that each of these different people groupings shares a way of responding to life based on what they were exposed to and influenced by growing up.
BABY BOOMERS
For example, the Baby Boomers are known for their work ethic. They are independent and self-reliant and expect as much of others as they do of themselves. They were already in the workforce when technology "appeared."
GENERATION X
Generation X, on the other hand, doesn't share the "workaholic" mindset of their predecessors (the Boomers). They are individualistic, enjoy flexibility and freedom, a casual work environment and are pragmatic (practical). They were in the workforce "using" technology.
GENERATION Y
Then comes Generation Y. They are confident, ambitious and self-inventive. They grew up with the Internet, are tech-savvy and "family-centric" (sometimes misinterpreted as narcissism). They are newest to the workforce and "assume" technology.
(For more information on the "generations" see links below.)
OUR RESPONSE
So what does a real estate professional do with this type of knowledge?
My short answer is he (she) does what he (she) always does. He gives his very best to his clients no matter what their generation. He masters and employs technology for his clients no matter what their generation. Above all, he is polite, patient and respectful whether working with a Boomer, Gen X or Y-er or beyond.
