Twitter "Rules"
If you've been on Twitter for very long you'll find out there's a mostly unspoken set of do's and don'ts - a "rule structure." (Be quiet. Don't tell anybody.)
And you won't know about it (for the most part) until ... you are in direct violation. If you break the (quote) "Law," don't worry. The Twitter "gods" have thunder and lightning bolts at their disposal and they will tell you. Pow! (Ouch. That hurt.)
All kidding aside, there's a bit of truth to what I just said. (Users of Twitter will agree.)
And this post really isn't so much about Twitter, neither is it about "rules" per se. Instead, it's about our treatment of people, especially the "newbies."
Of course, they're not gonna know the do's and don'ts just starting out (whether it's in social media or some other venue/area/career). Is there not a single one of us that can politely take them under our wings and teach them the ropes versus leaving them to fend for themselves and then yell at or ostracize them? (ostracize: "to exclude, by general consent, from society, friendship, conversation, privileges, etc.")

People learn from getting burned. It's the most effective way to change bad behavior since people don't seem to take warnings to heart. Besides, there are dozens of twitter tips, how-to guides and ways-your-using-twitter-wrong blog posts out there if you care enough to look for them.
Newbies don't need a mentor, they need to do their own research and join the stream as decent people instead of a loudmouth idiots. Small transgressions are over-looked for decent people and flamed for idiots- newbies, pick your side.
Totally agree Mike. There is a lot to learn for newbies in the twitter space, I certainly made a few mistakes when I started on twitter & had a few experts alert me to my errors so I could learn from them & not do them again. That said there are the people who refuse to take advice. I currently I have a follower (a competitor) who continually copies my tweets & claims them as their own. I wrote them a nice little message explaining how retweeting works & that they are more than welcome to RT my posts if they enjoyed them. They continue to copy my tweets though word for word without crediting me. This person also follows everyone I follow & is building their followers off my contacts – which is fine, twitter is an open space.
I eventually tweeted that someone was stealing my tweets without crediting me which I didn’t appreciate & as they had stolen my follower’s list people saw the duplicate tweets & stopped following them. They lost 50 followers in one day.
I'm a newbie - appreciate the post and have someone I met via twitter that is helping me...and appreciate it. This post is not just about twitter - it's about life.
Although I have been connected to Twitter for a while it really did not come to life for me until after a few lightening bolts hit. Ouch. Months pasted. Here I am again as I have seen how Twitter can help me further what I want to do. With Guidance I retouched Twitter. It has come back to life. Wow what an experience. So yes please offer guidance and set boundaries for others.
