How To "Focus" Away From Distractions
Tweet |
The story's told of New York Yankee catcher, Yogi Berra, who tried to distract baseball home run icon, Hank Aaron, when he came up to bat. Berra told Aaron he was holding the bat wrong, that he should be holding it so he could read the trademark. Remaining silent, Aaron proceeded to hit the very next pitch over the fence. As he tagged home plate after hitting the home run, he remarked to Berra, "I didn't come up here to read."
No matter what it is that you've got going on in your life, I think the greatest battle is with distractions. (You can relate?) They can come from a variety of directions, but I just want to mention two. First, distractions can come from other people (of course) who ~ they have their own soap box or cause and they want you to join / ride the bandwagon with them. (Ever have that happen?) And then second, distractions can come from ourselves (yeah, you heard it right) who ~ sometimes we would rather be doing something else (anything) instead of working, sweating, thinking, etc.
So how do we deal with these two types of distractions (other people and ourselves)? I'm answering the question with the following acronym: F-O-C-U-S. It isn't necessarily meant to be in chronological order, but to be taken as a whole...

F-actoring in interruptions. Allow breathing room in your day. That way when an interruption happens (an interruption is my definition of a "good" distraction), you can handle it. (And interruptions will happen no matter how focused you are.)
O-wning your time. Keep a regular schedule. Punch "in" and punch "out." When you're punched in, be all punched in. When you're punched out, relax (get distracted).
C-ompleting each task. Establish a habit of finishing things. Don't leave things undone. Dot that "i" and cross that "t". A job well done is a long list of tasks completed.
U-nderstanding your purpose. If you're meant to hit home runs and not read trademarks, then hit home runs. Hire somebody else to read trademarks (outsource it).
S-aying "No." Say "no" to solitaire, checking your emails (15 times a day), social media, etc., until your work is done. The more you say "no" to distractions, the easier it gets.
