How to Make Your Very Own Website Button (simple version)
I want to show you how easy it is to make your very own website button. A website button is a small image you can include on your website or blog to link to other pages or blog posts, etc.
To begin with, I want you to notice the website button image I have at the top of this blog post. I created this myself and if you click on it, it will take you to a blog post that includes links to all my Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Blog Posts. (Try it. You'll like it.)
USE OPENOFFICE DRAW
Now to create one of these buttons yourself, you'll want to use the OpenOffice.org Draw program. (OpenOffice is a free download.)
CHOOSE SHAPE
Once you've opened the program, your first step is to choose from the Basic Shapes pull down menu in the lower task bar. I chose a Square with Rounded Corners. Next, left click anywhere on your blank document, drag the pointer to create Shape and let go when it gets to your desired size. (See first image at right.)
CHANGE OUTLINE AND SHAPE COLOR
The next step is to change the color of the Shape Outline and Shape itself. To do the Outline first, right click on the Shape, choose Line, scroll up to Black, click OK. To do the Shape next, right click on the Shape, choose Area, scroll up to White, click OK. Don't forget to Save after every change. (See second image at the right.)
INSERT PICTURE
Now for some fun. In this third step we are going to add some clip art. Since my button focuses on Holiday Blog Posts, I chose a Santa. (You can choose whatever you like. Be careful with copyrights.) To add a picture to the button, click Insert in the upper tool bar, scroll down and choose Picture, then choose From File, find your picture (mine is Santa), click open, drag to desired size and place within the Shape Outline. Got it? (See the third image at the right.)
INSERT TEXT
The fourth step is to insert text. From the bottom Toolbar, choose Text (box), hold left click on the inside of the Shape and drag text box across to desired size, let left click go, then type desired text into each text box. (See the fourth image at the right. I am using a new text box per line.)
GROUP OBJECTS
The fifth step is to group objects. While holding Shift Key down, click text boxes individually (1, 2, 3, etc), click image, let go of Shift Key, right click on entire Shape and click Group. This will group the text boxes and image together. (To ungroup objects, double left click on image.)
SAVE AS PICTURE
Next (and very important), click outside entire Shape in unused area of sheet, then right click on Shape, choose Convert, then To Bitmap.
Next (and very important as well), click outside Shape in unused area of sheet, then right click on Shape and choose Save as Picture. Make sure to save as a png file as these don't lose their resolution compared to other picture file choices.
UPLOAD TO WEBSITE
Voila! You've got your very own website button. Now all you have to do is upload it and add a hyperlink pointing to your favorite blog post series.
