10 Mistakes People Make with Social Media (plus 1 bonus):
1. Become the policeman (or woman) of other people's approaches (just worry about yourself, okay?).
2. Expect to be an overnight success (no such thing).
3. Spread themselves too thin (you can't be everywhere all the time, but you can be somewhere some of the time).
4. Overlook the importance of a social media home base to point people to (a website or blog).
5. Put all their chickens in one basket (i.e. one social media platform), then when the basket is gone (or diminishes), their goose is cooked.
6. Don't realize the automation options that are available (like Hootsuite which allows you to schedule posts to Twitter and Facebook).
7. Overlook that it's okay to share blog posts more than once (they do it with songs on the radio!).
8. Don't set goals and plans (if you want 100,000 followers on Twitter or 10,000 people on your emailing list, how are you gonna get there?).
9. Forget to study what those who are being successful are doing and copy them (B-l-o-g-g-e-r; P-i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t; T-w-i-t-t-e-r).
10. Overlook that it really is okay to NOT respond to every person (and to take a break from social media from time to time).
BONUS Try to be someone they're not (be yourself).
