10 Mistakes People Make with the Generations (plus 1 bonus):
1. Aren't clear as regards the distinctions/names (Silent, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z/Post Millennials).
2. Forget that each of these different people groupings shares a way of responding to life based on what they were exposed to and influenced by growing up.
3. Don't realize their age ranges (Silent/Traditional/Greatest/Veterans: 1920-1946; Boomers: 1946-1964; X: 1964-1976; Y/Millennials: 1976-2000; Z/Post Millennials/Homelanders: 2000-present).
4. Overlook that Millennials grew up with the Internet and technology (much like Boomers who grew up with TV).
5. Overlook that Xers are not the workaholics their parents (the Boomers) were (Xers "work to live" versus Boomers who "live to work").
6. Don't realize that Post Millennials are sometimes referred to as Homelanders since their early years were shaped by the 9/11 attacks and the war on terrorism.
7. Don't realize the increase of life expectancy for Baby Boomers which, for a 65-year old American, is 17.7 years for a male and 20.3 years for a female (this represents three to four more years versus the Silent Generation).
8. Are ignorant to the fact that the Silent Generation holds three-quarters of the nation's wealth.
9. Don't realize that Xers are referred to as the “boomerang generation,” since they were forced to move back in with parents while in their 20s.
10. Haven't really thought about the up and coming Post Millennials who are just kids right now, but will be the consumers and CEOs of tomorrow.
BONUS Get so focused on generational differences that they forget that people are just human beings no matter what generation they are a part of with hopes and dreams and longings and fears, etc (handle with care).
