Techie Tips Series #2: Keyboard Shortcuts
Tweet |
Coming at you again with the second in a new blog post series meant to offer you computer tips to make your life easier on the computer (hopefully). In the first post I introduced the StrokeIt program which, upon installation, enables your mouse, through different gestures, to perform common functions within the computer programs you use. If you missed the StrokeIt post, CLICK HERE to read it. In this new post I want to go further with keyboard shortcuts. Again, I'm figuring most of you know the basics: Ctrl-C (Copy); Ctrl-V; (Paste); Ctrl-X (Cut); Ctrl-Z (Undo), etc. Just your knowledge and use of these first few will go a long ways to speeding up your use of Microsoft applications for one example. The shortcuts I want to remind you about today you may or may not have heard of as some of them are a little bit off the beaten track. Try 'em out in between closing escrows. Here they are:
General keyboard shortcuts:
CTRL+A (Select All)
CTRL while dragging an item (Copy the selected item)
CTRL+SHIFT while dragging an item (Creat a shortcut to the selected item)
SHIFT when you insert a CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive (Prevent the CD-ROM from automatically playing)
SHIFT+DELETE (Delete the selected item permanently without placing the item in the Recycle Bin)
F2 key (Rename the selected item)
F3 key (Search for a file or folder)
ALT+F4 (Close the active item, or quit the active program)
ALT+TAB (Switch between the open items) MY FAVORITE!
ALT+ESC (Cycle through items in the order that they had been opened) ANOTHER FAVORITE OF MINE!
BACKSPACE (View the folder one level up in My Computer or Windows Explorer)
RIGHT ARROW (Open the next menu to the right, or open a submenu)
LEFT ARROW (Open the next menu to the left, or close a submenu)
Microsoft natural keyboard shortcuts:
