Let's Talk Marketing

According to dictionary.com, marketing is the "the total of activities involved in the transfer of goods from the producer or seller to the consumer or buyer, including advertising, shipping, storing, and selling."
In this blog post I'm interested in the advertising part of marketing and talking about it with a story.
SHOOTING POOL
I used to live with a roommate who owned a pool table. When we would shoot pool together, he would inevitably end up laughing at me because my approach basically was "Hit and Miss." I would hit the cue ball and miss the shot, but sometimes a different ball would accidentally go in to another hole. "I planned it that way," I'd tell him. (Ha ha)
I would learn later (and my roommate was gracious enough to show me) about putting "english" on the cue ball (depending on which side you hit it, left or right, top or bottom, you can control the spin/speed and which way it goes).
I would also learn about the diamond markers on the sides of the pool table and how to use angles during shots.
There were intricacies to shooting pool and being successful at shooting pool that, once understood and employed, made a huge difference in my playing. (I still couldn't beat my roommate, by the way.)
ACCESS TO EXPERTS
As it has to do with marketing, and advertising in particular, I wonder if some of us don't use the "Hit and Miss" method (mostly) like I did early on as a pool player?
There's much more to it than just sending out random tweets or printed materials.
In a day and age when access to experts in any field are at our fingertips (via our computer keyboards), there really is no reason why we should continue on as novices especially in the area of advertising marketing.
