1. Become (are) one (Dictionary.com defines smart aleck as "an obnoxiously conceited person; a wise guy").
2. Overlook it's use as a protection mechanism in relationships (to keep people at a distance).
3. Give them (smart alecks) attention (only fuels their fire).
4. Don't realize it's sometimes a sign of an inferiority complex (low self-esteem).
5. Don't realize it's sometimes a sign of loneliness (person hungry for attention).
6. Don't realize it's sometimes a sign of affectionate feelings (guy likes gal; gal likes guy).
7. (For smart alecks) Forget that their jokes aren't always funny.
8. (For smart alecks) Forget that they can go too far.
9. (For smart alecks) Forget to say they're sorry when they've gone too far.
10. Forget to be merciful to smart alecks when they've gone too far (the bulk of them aren't all that bad after all).
